Canary Diamond Facts

Canary diamonds are the rarest form of diamond in the world. Approximately 1 in every 1000 diamonds that are mined is of canary diamond quality and can be categorized as such. Canary diamonds can be found where all the other diamonds are found. South Africa is a major diamond mining area, and it is where one of the largest canary diamonds was found in 1877. What gives canary diamonds its yellow color? Well, first of all, normal clear diamonds are made up of pure carbon and are bonded together by extreme heat and pressure deep into the earth. Yellow canary diamonds are simply made up of carbon with a few other elements mixed into it. The higher the concentration of these other element, the darker and richer the appearance of the canary diamond is. Darker canary diamonds are rarer than lighter ones, thus making deep yellow canary diamonds the most expensive out of all the shades of color.
